Williams Family: Famous Walter and Other Suppositions

First, Famous Walter!  The other evening, the husband, our houseguest, and I visited Disney's Coronado Springs Resort for a lovely alfresco meal at Three Bridges.  On both our way to and from the restaurant, we stopped by the resort gift shop, Panchito's Gifts and Sundries.  During our last stop, there was a small child crying in a stroller.  Multiple adults accompanied the child, each browsing sections of the store, with one of the adults pushing the stroller.  I approached and began talking to the securely strapped in little older than a toddler to distract him from crying.  It worked!  The adults gathered around the stroller, one to make sure I seemed (supposition) safe and two, to see the child's reactions.  I introduced myself to the child and one of the adults told me the child's name was Walter.  Oh, my!  I told Walter that this entire area was created by a man named Walt (Walter, actually) and therefore, he, Walter, was famous.  That generated a smile.  From that moment on, he was referred to as Famous Walter.  By the time our interaction ended, Famous Walter had his fingers in his mouth, his eyes droopy.  We waved good-bye.  It was evident that Famous Walter's family was from the UK and I ventured to guess arrived that day at the resort meaning it was a very long day and very late (supposition) for Famous Walter.

A supposition is "an idea that something may be true without certain proof."  I typically operate with a positive supposition.

Now, more about suppositions.

While playing cards on the lanai last evening, after a wonderful rainstorm that took the heat and humidity out of the air, a group of 17 to 22 year olds walked by on the sidewalk.  I said "good evening" and asked about the new camera.  A previous encounter had elicited a conversation about the purchase of a new video camera by one of the young men.  I was informed that none of that group had the camera, but the guy parking the car nearby was the owner of the camera.  This is what I overheard, "Hey, the people that we walk by all the time are asking about your camera?"  I love this!  We are part of the fabric of their neighborhood.  This makes us connected; safe.  As the camera owner walked by, he informed us that he had loaned it to a friend recently and would retrieve it shortly.  All of this isn't really about the camera--it was about having previous knowledge in which to have an interaction, a positive interaction!

It reminded me of the many times I was leaving work, exiting schools at the end of the day and the start of the evening, and seeing youngsters playing on playgrounds.  I won't say always, but I will say that I frequently verbally interacted with "who is winning" or "stay safe" or "keep an eye on the place."  I enjoyed these interactions with the young people, old enough to gather on an elementary school playground without parent supervision.  Some were former students, some were not.  And, each time, my supposition as to why they were there and what they were doing was positive--play, socialize, do no harm to others, themselves, me, or the building.  That positive supposition worked, for the most part. One school I was a part of for seven years, had vandalism the summer prior to my arrival and one other overnight incident.  I was told by a district maintenance supervisor that vandalism had declined.  Good!

As I venture, a positive supposition is a continued goal! Beliefs behind the words matters.

Looking Forward To More Than One Disney Vacation!

We are very grateful to be looking forward to more than one Disney vacation in the coming months.  Disney's Magical Express has sent us the luggage tags for more than one upcoming trip!

The trip to come first is a spring break jaunt to Walt Disney World.  We will be celebrating the husband's Birthday--who we have decided has celebrated more Birthdays at Walt Disney World than any of the rest of us!  We're staying at Disney's Coronado Springs for the first time since the summer of 2016.  Coronado Springs is undergoing refurbishment and building a multi-story tower of rooms to add to the resort.  Click here to read more about staying at Coronado Springs.

Our Fastpasses have been selected for this trip and grocery delivery is all set.  Packing is the what's left for this trip--that and making the husband his set of trip cards.

Some things that we are looking forward to during this trip include:

  • Dining at Raglan Road and House of Blues, both restaurants at Disney Springs.
  • A parade viewing and dining combo package at the Magic Kingdom featuring lunch at Tony's on Town Square and reserved viewing location for Festival of Fantasy Parade.  I did not know this offering existed until I was making Dining Reservations and uncovered it in the list of options.  We'll let you know how it goes.
  • Backstage Magic Tour  which is a new for us experience and includes a 7 hour tour that includes at least two parks, experiencing the utilidors at the Magic Kingdom, and lunch at Whispering Canyon at Disney's Wilderness Lodge.  An Annual Pass discount was available for this tour.
  • Highway in the Sky Dine Around which is a 5 course progressive dinner of sorts that starts at The Contemporary and stops at all monorail resorts for a course and returns to The Contemporary for dessert and fireworks viewing.  This, too, is new to us.  We have been looking at this unique opportunity since last spring and either it wasn't offered while we were at Walt Disney World or it had no availability.

The next countdown is for another trip to Walt Disney World.  We're staying at Disney's Pop Century, our fourth stay at this resort.  Click here to read about staying at Pop Century.  Some different experiences for this trip include:

  • Discovering Enzo's Hideaway Bar at Disney Springs.  No reservations are accepted so it's show up and see what happens.  Enzo's has a "Sunday Supper" offering that is on our agenda.
  • The opening of Toy Story Land at Disney's Hollywood Studios!
  • Taking Disney Cruise Line Transports from resort to port.  Taking the transports is not new to us, but we usually take the transport from the airport and arrive early at the port.  We're going to change things up this trip and take the transport from the resort, which will having us arrive at the port later--sometime after lunch.
Which brings us to the next countdown and that is for a 5 night sailing on the Disney Dream.  We booked this cruise while on board last summer.  The itinerary includes two days at Castaway Cay, our favorite itinerary--click here to read more.

I read an article  about the positive effects of vacations and how cruises have a long-term positive effect for up to 6 months after the cruise.  I agree!

When we disembark the cruise, we're headed to Disney's Grand Floridian Resort for a 2-night stay.   This stay is complimentary to Disney as an apology gesture for some bumps in our vacation last summer.  We've known about a 2 night complimentary stay since last summer and decided to use it almost a year later.  What we're specifically looking forward to while staying at the Grand Floridian:

  • Exploring a new resort.  We've been to the Grand Floridian many times for dining, but have never stayed there, so exploring is on our agenda!
  • Getting tickets for the 4th of July Celebration at the Grand Floridian that includes steak & shrimp fry along with 4th of July fireworks watching at a reserved location.  Last year, the tickets went on sale May 8.  I've got my eyes peeled for any releases!  I called Walt Disney World and the event is in their system but they are not booking it yet.
  • Trying Beaches & Cream, a restaurant located at Disney's Beach Club Resort.  We have a reservation for this restaurant for us first timers.
When people ask us why we keep going back, the lists above are just some of the reasons!  Walt Disney World has so many offerings and changes things up regularly so that there are new experiences for us to discover.

Disney's Coronado Springs, Here We Come!

Disney’s Coronado Springs, here we come!  Plans for our summer 2013 trip to Walt Disney World have changed a bit since Disney released their summer special yesterday morning.  Discounts of 20-30% were available for “most” resort stays from mid June through mid August.  I say “most” as some resorts were not included in the offer.

I phoned our Travel Agent and asked her to check on the availability of the summer special and what it might do to the price of our vacation.  Within a few minutes an email appeared.  Our current resort, Port Orleans French Quarter was not included in the special and was now more expensive (that wouldn’t affect us as our price would have stayed the same), but if we wanted to switch to Port Orleans Riverside or Coronado Springs, we would reduce the total price of our stay by up to $250.

Coronado Springs it is!  (Click here to read why we enjoy Coronado Springs.) We took the difference in the price and added Photopass + pre-order to our reservation and will still get a refund for the difference!

What is funny is that the whole time I have been visualizing our vacation, say arrival day, I pictured us at Coronado Springs and would have to remind myself that we were staying at Port Orleans French Quarter.  We have stayed at French Quarter before and liked it well enough---size, convenience, proximity to Riverside, boats to Downtown Disney, etc.  But once we stayed at Coronado Springs, it quickly became our favorite!  Coronado Springs was the last moderate resort Disney built and they had worked out several kinks by then, such as drink refills by the pool along with food availability, a great pool that is adjacent to the arcade, playground, and hot tub.

I had a feeling, too, that when we originally booked our summer vacation that a change of resorts might be coming.  That has happened before. . . changing resorts to take advantage of an offer and that is how we discovered Coronado Springs.  For folks willing to change their resort to take advantage of the offer, it may be well worth the savings.  And, they get a chance to experience a different Disney resort.

When I told the guys that we had changed resorts, there were cheers.  I was already picturing us in the pool and hot tub at the end of the day of park touring.  The husband reminded me that we were traveling in July so it was more likely going to be the pool than the hot tub.  Though, a soak in a hot tub can do wonders for tired feet.

So, we saved money, got a great resort, and I can check Photopass + off the shopping list.  Oh, so many reasons we love Disney AND our Travel Agent!

Oh, The Lure of Disney Trivia Contests

Maybe it is the lure of the competition but somehow our family is drawn to trivia contests, especially Disney trivia contests and during our December 2012 Disney Cruise Line and Walt Disney World vacation, we definitely took part in some Disney trivia challenges.

Our first go was with a Disney Cruise Line trivia contest held on the Disney Dream in the adult entertainment section of the ship during the port day in Nassau.  Since we decided to stay on the ship, the husband and I headed to the session while the boy was in the club.  With pens and paper ready, Callie from the Cruise Staff, lead us through the questions.  Little did I know it was multiple choice and I had fun writing down the answers before all the choices were announced. There was only one question that gave me fits.  Let’s just say we smoked the competition in that round and were the recipients of lovely Disney Cruise Line key chains.

In addition to meeting Callie, this is also where we met Mark and Suzy Perry from Atlanta who sent us great photos of the boy being crowned Holiday Prince of the Sea.

Still high from our victory, we entered another Disney trivia contests of sorts on the evening of our “at sea” day via Family Fusion.  Our first win was being chosen to participate in the family game show as only 3 families are picked from the audience.  We were in the lead until the final round and ready to enter this challenge again on our next cruise.

Another evening the husband and I decided to give “Match Your Mate” a try.  The boy was in the club and we headed to Evolution in the adult entertainment area.  In order to participate we had to enter a “dance off” with the audience choosing.  We were in the final two couples who vied for the last spot on the contest, but alas, did not make it to the stage.  We did enjoy watching and decided that we weren’t ready to “share” that much and were somewhat grateful at not being chosen.  If you haven’t seen “Match Your Mate”, Disney Cruise Line’s version of the Newlywed Game, I highly recommend that you catch it the next time you sail.

On the last evening of the cruise, I headed to Studio C for a Disney Trivia contest offered in the Personal Navigator.  It was fierce competition.  There was one question that had two possible answers, which I pointed out to the host.  The question involved a previous name for a famous mouse—of which there are two answers.  I finished in the top five.

After we disembarked the ship we headed to our Walt Disney World Resort, Coronado Springs.  The afternoon was spent soaking in the pool for the boy and the husband, or lazily napping by the pool by me.  Until that is, a Disney Princess Trivia contest was announced to be played poolside.  I retrieved paper and pen from the entertainment staff and proceeded to listen intently to the questions.  I met a lovely lady from Dallas who was sitting near and quickly became part of Team Williams, as the husband and boy were participating from the pool.  No prize or stellar finish for this contest, but we certainly had fun and got to recall all that we knew about Disney Princesses.

In addition to the competition, I think we enjoy the memories the Disney trivia questions evoke.  We also play better as a team, as a family.  I would have done much better in the Disney Trivia contest on the ship, with more Team Williams members with me, and I shared that with the husband and the boy.  Alas, that was what Walt had in mind all the time; providing activities that would allow families to have fun and make memories together.

We Have A New Favorite On Property Resort--Coronado Springs!

Coronado Springs is our new favorite on property Walt Disney World Resort.  We have stayed at Caribbean Beach twice, Port Orleans Riverside five times, Port Orleans French Quarter once, and Coronado Springs on our most recent trip.  A few days into our trip, we began to consider if we wanted to stay at Coronado Springs for our next trip to Walt Disney World.  The husband and I agreed yet we let the boy have a say, too.  It was unanimous!  I called our travel agent as soon as I could to make the change.  We are officially booked at Coronado Springs for our next trip.

Coronado Springs is a moderate resort, which means that the rooms are larger than a value resort, a refrigerator is included, and the themed pool will have a slide.  All true for Coronado Springs.  Yet, Coronado Springs is also a resort with a convention center and was Disney’s most recent attempt at a moderate resort.  Many of the kinks of some of the other moderates—such as the need for an internal bus system at Caribbean Beach and the inefficient food court of Port Orleans French Quarter have been worked out.  Disney has combined the magic for their resort guests with the efficiency needed for business travelers for Coronado Springs and it worked for us.

The resort has 4 main sections.  El Centro is where you will find guest registration, the resort store—Panchitos, the Pepper Market food court/restaurant, Café Rix Lounge, Maya Grill, and Café Rix.  The conference center, business center, and ballroom are all located in El Centro.  Bus stop 1 along with Magical Express drop off and pick-up all take place at El Centro.

Upon our arrival, we checked in which went smoothly and quickly due to checking in on-line before leaving home.  We were given our Key to The World Cards which included our dining credits, park tickets, and room key all in one.  The boy headed to the store, the husband held down a chair, and I then headed to Café Rix to get our mugs and fill them.  Since we were using the Disney Dining Plan, refillable mugs were included with the plan.  Café Rix had the mugs as well as the soda dispensers.  The bill would have been $46 had the mugs not been included in the plan.  We got our first refill, grabbed our resort map, and headed to our room.

Café Rix also has a limited quick service or counter service menu with sandwiches, etc.  Snacks, pastries, fruit, and other food items are available for purchase here and it is quick and convenient.

Rooms are located in three sections—Casitas which are connected to the convention center.  Guests staying here can make it from their room to El Centro without going outside.  There are various Casitas buildings ranging from 3 to 4 stories.  Ranchos are next again with various buildings.  Ranchos are 2 -3 story buildings.  Cabanas are between Ranchos and El Centro and are 2 story buildings.  We stayed in Cabanas, building 8A on the first floor.  The majority of Cabanas rooms offer lake and beach views.  We were less than 200 steps from bus stop 4 and the boy could sprint to the Dig Site main pool barely touching the ground.  Each section also includes a quiet pool.

Our room had two queen size beds, a TV, refrigerator, desk, bathroom, etc.  It was clean, well themed, and just right for us.  A noticeable difference was that there was carpet in the sink/vanity area.  In all the other resorts we have stayed at, this area was tile.  Our room was kept tidied throughout our stay and bonus—the shampoo, conditioner, and lotion was part of the H2O line which is also found on the Disney Cruise Line ships.  We brought enough home to last us for a while!

We spent more time at a pool this trip than we ever have.  Our first afternoon we took some time to enjoy the Dig Site pool.  It took us a while to figure out why we liked it, but then it hit us.  Everything was right here.  The playground, the arcade, the kiddie pool, the hot tub were all within eyesight of the pool.  At other resorts, the pool would be in one location and the hot tub down the path and around the corner, or the playground in another area.  Siesta’s, the pool bar, was also located here and in addition to being able to order adult beverages, there was a location next door where guests could refill their refillable mugs and order snacks and sandwiches.  We took advantage of this offering!  Each afternoon, Cast Members would host games and activities poolside.  The boy joined right in on our arrival afternoon.  Another day, there was a Disney trivia contest.  Team Williams took first prize!  We would also hit the pool and hot tub when returning from the parks later in the evening.  Movies would be shown on an inflatable screen in the playground area near the pool.  The boy would go from pool to playground to arcade while the husband and I soaked in the hot tub all the while being able to keep a parental ear and eye on the boy.  By the way, Coronado Springs boasts having one of the largest hot tubs with a capacity of 22 guests.

Buses at the resort were quick and efficient.  We even had an opportunity to compare then to some other resorts when we ventured off to eat at different locations.  Coronado Springs topped the comparison.  One day we had an EPCOT bus all to ourselves!  Another day, only us and another family were headed to Hollywood Studios.  Know that the busses make 4 stops.  Here is the order:  stop 2 which is Casitas, stop 3 for Ranchos, stop 4 for Cabanas, and stop 1 for El Centro.  Knowing this is also important as if you are staying in Ranchos for example and want a ride to El Centro, you can hop on any theme park bus for a ride.  Just get off the bus at stop 1 or El Centro.  Now, it is a bit different if you want a ride from El Centro back to Ranchos.  If that is the case, you want to grab a Downtown Disney bus which starts at stop 1 and proceeds through the rest of the stops ending with stop 4.

Another draw for us was the Pepper Market.  We discovered the breakfast buffet a few days into our stay.  The cost is that of a quick service or counter service meal.  Yet, you are seated by staff, have cloth napkins, and are served your drinks.  The buffet is expansive and breakfast includes made to order omelets.  The buffet is also offered for lunch.  Dinner is a la carte.

We made a quick comparison to Cape May Café as we had eaten breakfast there the day before.  Cape May Café counts as a table service credit and is twice as much as the Pepper Market breakfast buffet.  Still cloth napkins, still get served your drinks, but the buffet does not include made to order omelets and is much smaller in selection than the Pepper Market.  Yes, Cape May Café offers three Disney characters.  Our vote is for the Pepper Market.  Note:  whole fruits were available at the Pepper Market buffet along with individual cereal boxes.  This would be a great place to eat and grab a few snack items for a day of park touring or traveling home.  We already had plenty of cereal but we did take a couple of apples with us to put in our bag.  Another plus:  since we used the Disney Dining Plan quick service credits for breakfast and it comes with two drinks, we were offered small bottles of cold water to take with us.  We did not use our refillable mugs at Pepper Market.  We could have refilled them at Café Rix and brought them with, but since we were headed to the parks we did not bring them with.  (That’s another story—seeing guests tote their refillable mugs with them while in the parks.)

So why is Coronado Springs our new favorite?  Theming, efficiency, convenience of having the pool and playground in one location, and the value of the Pepper Market.  It just seemed that everything was easier this trip.  Maybe it was that this was trip #9 and we have information and experiences under our belt.  Maybe it was the great resort.  Maybe it was Disney Magic.  Whatever it was, we want a bit of it back for our next trip.  Coronado Springs, here we come again!

Staying At a Different Resort For Our Next Trip to Walt Disney World

At this time of year, most people are counting down the number of shopping days left before Christmas.  Children are counting down the number of days until Santa makes a stop at their house.  We are counting down the number of days until our next trip to Walt Disney World—100 days!

We have decided to try a new resort for our next trip—Coronado Springs, a moderate Disney resort.

We have stayed at Caribbean Beach Resort twice, and learned that location really does matter!  Caribbean Beach was Disney’s first attempt at a moderate resort.  I think they learned from their mistakes.

Port Orleans Riverside was our “home” for five trips to Walt Disney World—click here to read more.  We were hesitant to move away from our favorite and yet, queen sized beds lured us to Port Orleans French Quarter during our last stay—click here to read more.

This time we were lured by savings.  A spring discount was available during our travel dates, but only at certain resorts.  Coronado Springs was available for the discount, so we made the switch.  Just like that!  The husband had no hesitation.  He said we could give another resort a try, add information about Coronado Springs to the blog, and save some money.  Bingo!

We told the boy this morning.  “Does it have a pool?” was his response.  He wanted to see pictures—thank goodness for technology!

100 days!  I need to get packing!
