Mail By Sea at Disney Cruise Line's Castaway Cay

In a world of email, Facebook, and Twitter, sending “snail” mail may seem obsolete.  During our most recent Disney cruise, we planned to mail some cards from paradise—click here to read more.

Our plan included using the Post Office at Disney’s private island, Castaway Cay.  Our itinerary included two stops at Castaway Cay and we were hopeful to use the Post Office on at least one of the days.

Our personalized cards were already in envelopes, addressed, and included return address labels.  All they needed were Bahamian stamps before they were ready to be mailed from The Bahamas.

Our first day on the island was the day after Christmas and both times we walked by the Post Office it was closed.  There was no sign indicating hours or days of operation, but there was a mail slot for mail that already had stamps.  So, that night on the ship, plan B was formed.

The husband checked at Guest Services on the ship about the availability of Bahamian stamps.  Sure enough, they had some.  We needed 16 and while we were prepared with cash, as that is what would be required for the purchase of stamps on Castaway Cay, Guest Services was able to add the cost to our shipboard account.  65¢ each for the stamps—and we thought our postage rates were high!  We placed the stamps on each of the pre-addressed envelopes.

The next morning, the envelopes went with us when we disembarked the ship for our second day at Castaway Cay.  The Post Office is located conveniently just a few feet down the path from the ship on the way to the Tram Stop.

The boy was curious and read each name prior to slipping the envelopes into the mail slot.

And, just when we had put all of our mail into the slot, the Post Master arrived to open the Post Office.  It was around 9:30 am or so.

While we didn’t need any service, we did want to take a peek inside the Post Office and take some photos.

For fun, we mailed one of the cards to our address.  As of this writing, we have yet to receive it in the mail.  The cards were mailed on Thursday, December 27, 2012.  So friends and family who might be reading this post, we did think about you and mail you something from The Bahamas, but it just may take a bit longer to get to you.

Things to know about the Post Office on Castaway Cay:
  • Post cards are for sale inside
  • Hours and days of operation vary
  • Cash only and I would recommend smaller denominations of bills and coins so that making change is easier (we had packed $1 bills to take with us for this purpose).

And, who is the mail manager on Castaway Cay?  Well, it may be Tamara!
